What Is Archery Tag? How to Play, and More

Archery Tag is a relatively new sport that is gaining in popularity. It combines the excitement of archery with the physicality of dodgeball. If you are looking for a new and unique sport to try, Archery Tag is worth checking out! In this blog we’ll discuss what it is, how to play, what you need, and more!

What is Archery Tag?

Archery Tag is a sport that combines the elements of archery and dodgeball. Two teams compete against each other, with each team having at least five players. There are a few different objectives but typically it is to score points by hitting targets, or opposing players, with padded arrows. The game is often played on a field with obstacles and barriers that players can use for cover.

Of course, the game of Archery Tag is not played with an actual bow and arrows. Instead, players utilize foam-tipped padded arrows, which means you’ll be able to work on your archery skills without worrying about hurting anyone.

Who Invented Archery Tag?

John Jackson, the CEO of Global Archery Products, is credited with creating Archery Tag. While creating new products for his archery business, Jackson had the idea to create a foam-tipped arrow that could be used to play a safe yet competitive game of tag. Within a few hours, he created the non-lethal arrow. After working on the design and making some changes to ensure it could actually work, the game of Archery Tag was born! The best part is that the game is appropriate for all ages, and countries around the world are adopting this game.

How to Play Archery Tag?

According to the official Archery Tag website, there are two different ways to play the game. You can either choose to play elimination tag or league tag. While each has its own sets of rules, they both have the same common ground rules, including:

  • Teams must have a minimum of five players on each side. If there are more than five players, the extra players must hang out on the sidelines and can be subbed in at any time. However, there is no pausing the game, so the exchange of bows to the oncoming player must be quick and swift.
  • The field must be divided into different zones, including two attack zones and a neutral zone which is located between the attack zones.
  • The safe zone is used to grab stray arrows without worrying about being eliminated. However, the safe zone is not for hanging out, and any players who are in the safe zone for more than five seconds will receive a warning. If this happens again, they may either be eliminated from the game or have a point deducted from their team, depending on the style of game they’re playing.
  • Players can only shoot at each other when they’re inside their own attack zone. Shooting inside the safe zone is against the rules.
  • Each attack zone will contain various objects that can be used to hide behind during gameplay.
  • The game itself is played in two halves, each lasting five minutes. If the score is tied at the end of the game, there will be a three-minute overtime period.
  • All teams must wear protective gear, which includes a face mask and arm guards.

To start the game of Archery Tag, arrows are left in the safe zone, and bows are positioned at the lines of the attack zone. Players will have to take a position in the attack zone and run to grab arrows from the safe zone. Once they have enough, they must run back to the attack zone and start shooting at their competition.

Two Unique Play Styles

LEAGUE STYLE

To play league style Archery Tag, it’s all about gaining points. There are a few different ways to earn points. For example, catching an arrow earns your team 3 points, shooting a spot in the opposing team’s targets earns 2 points, and hitting a player with an arrow earns 1 point. At the end of the game, the team who earned the most points will win. For beginners, league style Archery Tag will be the easiest way to play as all players will get to play the entire time, enhancing their skills and making it more fun.

ELIMINATION STYLE

If you’re looking for a more competitive game, then the elimination style Archery Tag will be perfect for you. It’s all about being the last team standing. When a player gets hit with an arrow, they are eliminated from the game and must sit on the sidelines. However, if their teammate is able to hit a 5-point target or catch an arrow, they can call back one of their teammates. This continues until the timer runs out or all players from the opposing team have been eliminated. For more experienced players, elimination style Archery Tag is the best way to play as it really tests your skills.

Why Should I play Archery Tag?

Besides the fact that it’s an incredibly fun game, Archery Tag is also a great way to get some exercise. It’s perfect for those who want to try something new or don’t like traditional sports. Archery Tag is also a great bonding experience, whether you’re playing with friends, family, or co-workers.
